Your Local Erdington Pharmacy – Shingles Treatment (Pharmacy First)

Fast Access to Antiviral Treatment for Shingles in Erdington

Experiencing the painful, blistering rash that is characteristic of Shingles? Getting treatment started quickly is crucial to reduce the severity and duration of the illness.
At Your Local Erdington Pharmacy (B24 8EH), our trained pharmacists can now assess and, where clinically appropriate, provide NHS-funded antiviral medication for Shingles through the Pharmacy First Service, without you needing to wait for a GP appointment.

The Shingles Pharmacy First Service Explained

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a viral infection that causes a painful rash, usually on one side of the body. Timely treatment with antiviral drugs can significantly help. Our pharmacist-led service provides this essential care right in your community.

Who is eligible?

This service is for adults aged 18 years and over with symptoms suggestive of an acute shingles infection.

Crucially, antiviral treatment is most effective when started within 72 hours (3 days) of the rash first appearing. Don’t delay—come and see us straight away!

Typical Shingles Symptoms

You should visit us if you have any of the following:

What to expect from your consultation

  • Urgent Walk-In

If you suspect Shingles, come into the pharmacy as soon as possible. No appointment is required.

  • Private Assessment

You will have a confidential consultation with our pharmacist in our private room. They will examine the rash and discuss the onset and severity of your symptoms.

  • Treatment Decision

    • Antiviral Medication: If you meet the NHS clinical criteria (especially the time-frame for the rash), the pharmacist can immediately supply antiviral tablets (such as Aciclovir).
    • Pain Management:We will also provide advice and treatment for managing the associated pain.
    • Referral:If the rash is severe, affects your eye area, or if you have complex medical history, the pharmacist will refer you to your GP, NHS 111, or another specialist service for further care.

  • GP Notification:

We will notify your GP about the treatment provided to ensure your health record is kept up-to-date.

The Importance of Acting Fast

The most significant factor in the successful treatment of Shingles is time. Starting antiviral medication as soon as possible, ideally within the first 72 hours, can reduce pain, limit the spread of the rash, and lower the risk of long-term nerve pain (post-herpetic neuralgia).

If you see the rash, think Pharmacy First and come to Your Local Erdington Pharmacy immediately.
