Vitamin B12

Feeling run down and tired all of the time? Find it difficult to become motivated or stay focused? Feeling low in mood or energy levels? Struggle to sleep or fight off infections? You may be deficient in Vitamin B12. Good news though, you can get the Vitamin B12 Injection in Birmingham through Your Local Erdington Pharmacy.

What is Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is a micronutrient called cobalamin. It is one of 13 essential vitamins that our bodies require to stay alive and remain healthy. Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in a number of bodily functions:

– Essential in the composition of DNA

– Vital for the development and functioning of the brain and nerve cells

– Required to make red blood cells

Sub-optimal levels of B12 can lead to symptoms of tiredness, fatigue, poor memory, low mood and reduced mental function.

Vitamin B12 is naturally found in meat, eggs, poultry, and milk. It is a water-soluble vitamin, and so it quickly and easily leaves our body in our urine. It is therefore uncommon to overdose in Vitamin B12

Unfortunately, there are a small number of groups of patients that are unsuitable for the service. These patients are:

How likely is it that something could go wrong?

Treatment will only be provided following a clinical consultation and is not guaranteed. Your pharmacist will confirm whether treatment is appropriate for you, and your preferred option will not be given if it is not clinically suitable. If injections aren’t right for you, your pharmacist will recommend the best alternative at your consultation.

Our Private Vitamin B12 Injection Service in Birmingham

Birmingham B12 Injection Service

Our B12 service is led by a GPhC-registered pharmacist with clinical training in injectable treatments. Every patient receives a one-to-one consultation before their injection is administered.

During the consultation, your pharmacist will review your symptoms, any recent blood test results, and your medical history. So the treatment is appropriate and safe for you. The injection is given intramuscularly, usually into the upper arm, and takes just a few minutes.

We use clinically preferred form of B12 used across NHS and private settings. Your pharmacist will advise on how frequently you may need injections based on your individual circumstances.

B12 Injections for Vegans

Plant-based diets contain little to no natural B12. For vegans and vegetarians who are deficient or at risk, injections offer a reliable and direct way to maintain healthy levels. No dietary compromise required.

What Is a Vitamin B12 Injection and How Does It Work?

Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient your body cannot produce on its own. It plays a key role in red blood cell production, nerve function, and energy metabolism. Most people get enough through their diet, but some do not absorb it properly.

A B12 injection delivers the vitamin directly into the muscle, bypassing the digestive system entirely. This makes it far more effective for people who struggle to absorb B12 through food or oral supplements.

Quick, painless injection in the upper arm. Most patients leave immediately feeling perfectly fine.

Who May Need Vitamin B12 Injections?

B12 injections may be suitable for people aged 18 years and over with confirmed or suspected low B12 levels. They are particularly relevant for those whose bodies cannot absorb B12 efficiently through the gut. Oral supplements are not always enough in these cases.

Who May Benefit

People who may benefit include those with pernicious anaemia, older adults with reduced stomach acid, strict vegans and vegetarians, and patients who have had certain gastrointestinal surgeries. If you have been told by a GP or clinician that your B12 is low, our service offers a convenient and accessible option for ongoing treatment.

We do not diagnose B12 deficiency. A consultation with our pharmacist will help determine whether this service is appropriate for you.

Who Should Not Receive a B12 Injection

To keep you safe, we cannot administer B12 injections if you have a known allergy to the injection content, cobalamin, or cobalt. Other exclusions include Leber’s hereditary optic atrophy, low blood potassium, heart rhythm issues, or active cancer treatment.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your GP or midwife before booking. Your pharmacist will review your medical history at consultation and advise whether the service is appropriate for you.

If injections aren’t right for you, your pharmacist will recommend the best alternative at your consultation

What Can Cause Vitamin B12 Deficiency?

The most common cause is pernicious anaemia, an autoimmune condition that prevents the stomach from producing a protein needed to absorb B12. This condition is more common in older adults and those with a family history of it.

Dietary intake is another factor, particularly for those following a vegan or vegetarian diet. B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products. People who eat little or no meat, fish, or dairy are at greater risk.

Other causes include long-term use of certain medications such as metformin or proton pump inhibitors, conditions affecting the small intestine such as Crohn’s disease or coeliac disease, and previous gastric surgery. Age-related changes in stomach acid production can also reduce B12 absorption over time.

How Often Will I Need Injections?

This depends on the underlying reason for your deficiency. Patients with pernicious anaemia typically need injections every 8 to 12 weeks on an ongoing basis. Those with a dietary deficiency may only need a short course while adjusting their intake or starting oral supplements.

Your pharmacist will give you a clear recommendation after your consultation. We keep a record of your treatment so that managing follow-up appointments is straightforward.

For GP-confirmed deficiency, we start with a six-injection loading course over two weeks, followed by maintenance every two to three months. If you’re getting B12 for wellbeing or prophylaxis, you likely won’t need that loading phase. We’ll confirm your personal treatment plan during your consultation.

Benefits and Role of Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is involved in several essential body processes. Without adequate levels, these systems cannot function as they should.

Its primary roles include the formation of healthy red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. It also supports the maintenance of the myelin sheath, the protective layer around nerve fibres. Damage to this sheath is what causes the neurological symptoms associated with long-term deficiency.

B12 also contributes to normal energy-releasing metabolism and plays a part in DNA synthesis. Maintaining adequate levels through injection, particularly in those who cannot absorb it orally, supports these functions directly and reliably.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a B12 injection without a blood test?

You do not need a recent blood test to access our service, but having one helps us personalise treatment more accurately. Our pharmacist will assess your suitability at consultation and advise whether testing is recommended before or after your injection.

Yes. We use hydroxocobalamin, the same form of B12 used in NHS practice. The dose and administration method are identical to what you would receive through your GP surgery.

Side effects are uncommon and usually mild. Some patients experience brief soreness or redness at the injection site. Rarely, patients may feel slightly flushed or dizzy immediately afterwards. Serious reactions are very rare.

Most medications do not interact with B12 injections. But, you should inform your pharmacist of all current medications during your consultation, including supplements and over-the-counter medicines, so any risks can be assessed properly.

Some patients notice an improvement in energy and concentration within a few days. Others take a few weeks to feel the full benefit. Response time varies depending on how deficient you are and how long the deficiency has been present.
