At Your Local Erdington Pharmacy, we provide a full range of travel health services. Whether you’re traveling for a family holiday, business trip, or long backpacking journey, we can help with:
Every patient receives a personalised pre-travel consultation before any vaccine or medication is given. Our pharmacist will review your itinerary, activities, and medical history to build a travel health plan that fits your trip.
We cover food and water safety, insect bite prevention, altitude risks, and destination-specific disease outbreaks. You will leave with clear written guidance alongside your treatment.
We stock a full range of travel vaccines, including yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis A and B, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, meningitis ACWY, and more. Most vaccines are administered on the same day as your consultation where clinically appropriate.
Same-week appointments are available for patients with approaching departure dates.
Some travel health risks require medication rather than vaccination. Our pharmacist can prescribe and dispense antimalarials, altitude sickness tablets, travellers diarrhoea antibiotics, and period delay tablets during your appointment.
Everything can be arranged in a single visit. There is no need for a separate GP prescription.
We are an approved yellow fever vaccination centre. This means we can administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue the International Certificate of Vaccination, known as the yellow card, on the same day.
Not every pharmacy or clinic holds this accreditation. If yellow fever vaccination is a visa requirement for your destination, you must use an approved centre. We are one of a limited number in Birmingham.
Your body can’t fight germs it hasn’t seen before. Many countries have germs not found in the UK, so you are not protected.
Illnesses like typhoid or hepatitis A are common there but rare here. Eating street food, drinking tap water, or being in crowds can spread these germs. Vaccines help keep you safe.
Some countries require proof of certain vaccines, like yellow fever, to enter. Without this, you might not be allowed in.
If you get very sick abroad, treatment can be expensive or hard to get, and insurance may not cover vaccine-preventable illnesses. Getting vaccinated before you travel is the safest choice.
At Your Local Erdington Pharmacy, we provide a full range of travel health services. Whether you’re traveling for a family holiday, business trip, or long backpacking journey, we can help with:

Some travellers have specific health needs that require a more tailored approach. Our pharmacist has experience advising patients across a wide range of circumstances. If you fall into any of the groups below, please mention this when booking so we can allow enough time for your consultation.
Meningitis ACWY is a mandatory vaccine for all pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia. It must be given at least 10 days before arrival in Makkah or Madinah. We see many Hajj and Umrah patients each year, particularly in the months leading up to the pilgrimage season.
We issue a valid vaccination certificate on the same day for your visa application. Please bring your passport. We also recommend discussing typhoid, hepatitis A, influenza, and hepatitis B depending on your health status and length of stay.
Children have different vaccination requirements to adults, and some vaccines are not suitable below certain ages. We assess each child individually and tailor recommendations to their age, weight, and itinerary.
We prescribe and dispense malaria tablets for children at £1 per tablet. If you are travelling as a family, please book each child their own consultation slot. Let us know at the time of booking so we can allocate sufficient appointment time.
Older travellers may have a different immune response to some vaccines and may be taking medications that interact with travel prescriptions. Underlying health conditions can also affect which antimalarials or other medications are appropriate.
We take a careful, patient-led approach with older travellers. Our pharmacist will review your current medications and health history in full before making any recommendations.
Travel vaccination during pregnancy requires careful consideration. Some vaccines, including yellow fever and certain live vaccines, are generally not recommended during pregnancy. Others are safe and important.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, tell us when booking. Our pharmacist will work through your itinerary and advise on what is safe, what should be deferred, and whether your destination carries risks that may affect your travel plans entirely.
Travellers with conditions such as HIV, cancer, or those taking immunosuppressant medications require specialist advice. Live vaccines are often contraindicated in immunocompromised patients, and some destinations may carry risks that are disproportionately high for this group.
We will review your condition and current treatment before making any recommendations. In some cases, we may liaise with your specialist or GP to ensure the safest plan is in place before you travel.
Trekkers, cyclists, volunteers, and expedition travellers face risks that typical holiday advice does not cover. Remote areas, altitude, wildlife exposure, limited access to medical care, and extended trips all change the risk profile significantly.
Vaccines such as rabies become far more relevant when you are far from a hospital. We take a detailed look at your itinerary, accommodation type, and planned activities to ensure your travel health plan matches the reality of your trip.
We support businesses and organisations that send staff abroad regularly. Whether your employees travel to high-risk regions for work or require ongoing travel health management, we can provide vaccinations, health assessments, and documentation.
Group bookings and occupational health arrangements can be discussed directly with our pharmacy team. Please call us to find out what we can put in place for your organisation.
Different countries carry different health risks. Here are some common destinations and what we typically recommend:
Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Rabies (for longer stays), Malaria prevention for rural areas
Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Japanese encephalitis (for rural or longer trips), Rabies, Dengue
Yellow fever (often mandatory), Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Rabies, Malaria tablets, Meningitis
Meningitis ACWY (mandatory), Typhoid, Hepatitis A
Meningitis ACWY (mandatory), Typhoid, Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Hepatitis B
Always check the latest Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) guidance alongside your travel health advice, as disease outbreaks and entry requirements can change.
Depending on your destination and itinerary, you may also need prescription medication to stay safe. Our pharmacist can assess, prescribe, and dispense the following travel medications during your consultation.
Malaria is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease spread through mosquito bites. It is found in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, South East Asia, and Central and South America.
The most suitable malaria prevention depends on your destination, the type of malaria present, your medical history, and the length of your trip.
Our pharmacist will assess your individual needs and recommend the most appropriate preventative treatment. If suitable, your medication can be prescribed and dispensed during your appointment. We also offer malaria prevention for children, with tablets available from £1 each.
Altitude sickness can affect anyone travelling above 2,500 metres, regardless of age or fitness level. Popular destinations such as Nepal, Peru, Bolivia, and parts of East Africa carry an increased risk.
Our pharmacist will assess your travel plans and medical history to determine whether preventative treatment is appropriate for you. If suitable, a private prescription can be issued following your consultation.
Some travellers choose to delay their period for a holiday, pilgrimage, or expedition. For many women, this can be a straightforward and suitable option. During your travel consultation, our pharmacist will assess whether period delay treatment is appropriate for you.
If suitable, a private prescription can be issued, and your medication can be dispensed in the pharmacy on the same day. You will also receive clear guidance on how and when to take your treatment.
Travellers’ diarrhoea is one of the most common travel-related illnesses and can significantly disrupt your trip, particularly when visiting destinations with lower food hygiene standards or poor sanitation.
For eligible travellers, our pharmacist can assess whether standby treatment is appropriate based on your destination, travel plans, and medical history. If suitable, a private prescription can be issued, along with clear advice on when and how to use your treatment should symptoms develop while you are abroad.

I attended Your Local Pharmacy in Erdington today for the first time to have a B12 injection. I was unable to get a timely appointment at my GP practice and was desperately in need of my B12 jab. I was amazed at the level of customer focussed care extended to me today. After an in-depth consultation I received my B12 injection and provided with after care literature and monitoring form. I've booked my next appointment for six weeks. I cannot speak highly enough of the level of care received today and can highly recommend Your Local Pharmacy, Erdington. Thank you Your Local Pharmacy Erdington.Posted on Google![]()

I woke up with a blocked ear, made what I thought was a same day appointment. I arrived 5 minutes early which is when I realised I'd actually booked for the next day. Thankfully they managed to fit me in, 10 minutes later no more blocked ear. I didn't get the gentleman's name that treated me, he was super welcoming and very professional throughout. Perfect service, will definitely use them again.Posted on Google![]()

I had my ears cleaned of heavy wax deposits with no problems. The process was carried out professionally and was painless and if I have the same problem in the future I will go to the same pharmacy.

Ideally, get vaccinated 6 to 8 weeks before you travel. Some vaccines need several doses over weeks. But even a last-minute shot is better than none.
Some travel vaccines, like typhoid and hepatitis A for certain places, are available on the NHS. We will always tell you which ones qualify so you don’t pay needlessly.
Yes. We are an approved yellow fever vaccination centre and can issue the International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) on the same day.
Yes. We prescribe and dispense malaria prevention tablets for children at £1 per tablet. The correct type and dose depend on the child’s weight and destination.
Yes, always. A consultation helps us confirm which vaccines are right for your trip and checks for any medical reasons that might affect what we prescribe.
You can book appointments for several family members on the same day, but each person needs their own consultation. Please tell us when booking so we can set aside enough time.
Hepatitis A spreads via contaminated food and water; Hepatitis B spreads through blood and fluids. Both vaccines protect different infections and are often given together for travel.
Some antimalarial medications require a private prescription, which our pharmacist can issue during your consultation. We dispense them on-site, so there is no need to visit a GP.
Vaccine protection varies: typhoid lasts about 3 years, hepatitis A long-term after two doses, and yellow fever usually lasts a lifetime. Boosters will be advised during your consultation.
Bring your passport or travel documents, any existing vaccination records or yellow cards, a list of your current medications, and details of your travel itinerary, including all destinations.
