Blood Testing

This Is Paid Service- It Is Not Associated With Blood Testing Provided By Your GP

Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test. Most blood tests only take a few minutes to complete and are carried out at Your Local Erdington Pharmacy.
We give you service like Hep B, Varicella, MMR and other at Your Local Erdington Pharmacy.
For example, a blood test can be used to:

  • assess your general state of health
  • check if you have an infection
  • see how well certain organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are working
  • screen for certain genetic conditions

Preparing for a blood test

At Your Local Erdington Pharmacy we can arrange your blood test and will let you know whether there are any specific instructions you need to follow before your test such as:

  • Avoid eating or drinking anything (fasting) apart from water, for up to 12 hours
  • Stop taking certain medicines
It’s important to follow the instructions you’re given, as it may affect the result of the test and mean it needs to be delayed or carried out again.

After the test

Only a small amount of blood is taken during the test so you shouldn’t feel any significant after-effects. However, some people feel dizzy and faint during and after the test. If this has happened to you in the past, tell the person carrying out the test so they’re aware and can help you feel more comfortable. After the test, you may have a small bruise where the needle went in. Bruises can be painful, but are usually harmless and fade over the next few days.

What happens during a blood test?

A blood test usually involves taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm.
The arm is a convenient part of the body to use because it can be easily uncovered. The usual place for a sample to be taken from is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface.

Before taking the sample, the phlebotomist may clean the area of skin with an antiseptic wipe.

A needle attached to a syringe or special container is inserted into the vein. The syringe is used to draw out a sample of your blood. You may feel a slight pricking or scratching sensation as the needle goes in, but it shouldn’t be painful. If you don’t like needles and blood, tell the person who is taking the sample so they can make you more comfortable.

When the sample has been taken, the tourniquet will be released, and the needle will be removed. Pressure is applied to the skin for a few minutes using a cotton-wool pad. A plaster may be put on the small wound to keep it clean.

Receive Your Results

Most results are ready within 24 to 48 hours. We'll contact you directly. You'll get a clear written report you can share with your GP if needed.

Private Blood Test in Birmingham

Private blood testing gives you direct access to clinical results without going through a GP first. You choose the test, book at a time that suits you, and get your results sent directly to you.

That can matter a great deal when you’re waiting on answers about your thyroid, hormones, immunity, or liver function. Weeks spent waiting for an NHS referral can feel like a long time when something feels off.

Symptoms That May Require a Blood Test

Blood tests can pick up things you might write off as “just getting older” or “being run down.” If you’ve had any of the following for more than a few weeks, it’s worth investigating.

Fatigue and Tiredness

Persistent tiredness that doesn't improve with rest can point to anaemia, low B12, iron deficiency, or thyroid issues. A full blood count or thyroid test can rule these in or out quickly.

Unexplained Weight Changes

Gaining or losing weight without changing your diet or activity levels may indicate thyroid dysfunction, hormonal imbalance, or diabetes. An HbA1c and thyroid test together cover most of the common causes.

Hair Loss

Excess hair shedding in both men and women is often linked to ferritin deficiency, thyroid problems, or hormonal changes. Testing ferritin, thyroid, and a hormone panel gives a clear picture.

Hormone Imbalance

Irregular periods, low libido, mood shifts, or symptoms of the menopause can all be measured through our female or male hormone panels. Knowing your levels gives you something concrete to act on.

Frequent Infections or Slow Recovery

If you seem to catch everything going or take longer than usual to recover, a full blood count can check your white cell count and immune function.

Key Benefits of Private Blood Testing

No GP referral needed. You can book and test without waiting for a GP appointment

Fast results, usually within 24 to 72 hours

Wide range of tests under one roof, from immunity checks to STI screening

Fully confidential: results go directly to you, not your GP, unless you choose to share them

Convenient location in Erdington, with parking nearby and extended Wednesday hours

Clear, written results you can use for travel, insurance, employment, or personal health tracking

Blood Test in Birmingham

What to Expect During a Blood Test?

Most people feel apprehensive about blood tests, especially if they haven’t had one for a while. In practice, the appointment is straightforward and usually takes under ten minutes.

When you arrive, our phlebotomist will ask you a few quick questions about fasting, medications, or any specific test requirements. For some tests, such as cholesterol or glucose, you may need to fast for up to 12 hours beforehand. We’ll confirm this when you book.

The sample is usually taken from a vein in the crook of your elbow. The skin is cleaned with an antiseptic wipe first. You’ll feel a brief scratch when the needle goes in, but most patients say it’s much less uncomfortable than they expected. The whole sample collection takes about two to three minutes.

Afterwards, light pressure is applied with a cotton pad, and a small plaster is put over the site. You’re free to leave immediately. Some people feel mildly dizzy, so let us know if that’s happened to you before and we’ll make sure you’re seated and comfortable throughout.

I attended Your Local Pharmacy in Erdington today for the first time to have a B12 injection. I was unable to get a timely appointment at my GP practice and was desperately in need of my B12 jab. I was amazed at the level of customer focussed care extended to me today. After an in-depth consultation I received my B12 injection and provided with after care literature and monitoring form. I've booked my next appointment for six weeks. I cannot speak highly enough of the level of care received today and can highly recommend Your Local Pharmacy, Erdington. Thank you Your Local Pharmacy Erdington.

I woke up with a blocked ear, made what I thought was a same day appointment. I arrived 5 minutes early which is when I realised I'd actually booked for the next day. Thankfully they managed to fit me in, 10 minutes later no more blocked ear. I didn't get the gentleman's name that treated me, he was super welcoming and very professional throughout. Perfect service, will definitely use them again.

Not unless you request it. Your results are sent directly to you. You’re welcome to share the written report with your GP, but we won’t contact them without your consent.

Yes. Certain tests such as TB QuantiFERON, syphilis, and HIV are commonly required for visa applications. We offer all of these as standalone tests with written results documentation.

What Is Phlebotomy? A Simple Guide to Pharmacy Blood Testing

Understanding Phlebotomy and Its Role in Pharmacy Blood Testing If you have ever needed a blood test or wondered how blood is drawn in a professional setting, you may have encountered the term “phlebotomy.” At Your Local Pharmacy, our private services include comprehensive blood testing performed by skilled professionals in a calm and welcoming environment. In this guide, we explain what phlebotomy is, why it is essential for your healthcare, and how our pharmacy can support you through a smooth and efficient process. What Is Phlebotomy? Phlebotomy is the process of drawing blood from a vein for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. This procedure is used in a variety of settings, from general practitioner clinics to specialised pharmacies offering private services. Though the concept might seem technical at first glance, phlebotomy is a straightforward, safe, and routine practice that plays a critical role in diagnosing and monitoring health conditions. At Your Local Pharmacy, we prioritise your comfort while ensuring that high-quality care is consistently delivered. Why Blood Testing Matters Blood testing is a cornerstone of modern medicine. Whether it’s for screening, diagnosis, or monitoring ongoing treatment, a small sample of blood can provide considerable insights into your health. By evaluating various components in the blood, healthcare professionals can detect infections, assess organ functions, monitor cholesterol levels, and even determine the effectiveness of medications. This information helps create personalised treatment plans that are essential in maintaining and improving overall well-being. How Phlebotomy Is Performed in a Pharmacy Setting Private services offered at pharmacies, such as those at Your Local Pharmacy, are designed with patient comfort in mind. Here is how phlebotomy typically works in our facility: Initial Consultation The process begins with a brief consultation, where a trained healthcare professional discusses your medical history and any concerns you might have. This step ensures that the procedure is tailored to your individual needs, creating a comfortable and reassuring experience. The Blood Draw During the procedure, the technician locates a suitable vein – often in the upper arm – and uses a small, sterile needle to draw the sample. Our team adheres to strict hygiene protocols and uses state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that the process is as safe and efficient as possible. With a focus on minimising discomfort, most patients find the experience much less daunting than expected. Post-Procedure Care After the blood draw, minimal aftercare is required. A small bandage is applied to the site to ensure that any slight pressure on the puncture is maintained. Our team will provide you with comprehensive aftercare advice, such as staying hydrated and avoiding strenuous activity shortly after the test. Should you have any further questions or encounter any issues, do not hesitate to contact our pharmacy directly. The Benefits of Pharmacy Blood Testing Pharmacy-based blood testing offers several advantages worth considering: Accessibility and Convenience With extended opening hours and flexible service appointments, pharmacies provide a convenient alternative to larger medical facilities. This approach minimises waiting times and brings healthcare closer to your local community. Personalised Care Your Local Pharmacy prides itself on offering tailored private services. Our trained staff take the time to explain each step of the phlebotomy process, ensuring that you feel well-cared for and informed about your health. This personalised approach not only helps in reducing anxiety but also builds a trusted relationship between you and your healthcare provider. Enhanced Privacy For patients who prefer a discreet environment, private pharmacy services offer a level of confidentiality that might not be as easily achievable in public clinics or hospitals. The private setting allows you to focus on your health without the distractions or concerns that might arise in larger, busier environments. Ensuring Quality and Safety Quality and safety are at the forefront of every service we offer at Your Local Pharmacy. Our experienced phlebotomists and healthcare professionals utilise strict protocols to ensure that every blood test is conducted in line with the highest industry standards. From initial consultations to the final stages of aftercare, every step is performed with careful attention to detail and respect for patient privacy. Regular training and audits further guarantee that our procedures remain amongst the best in private pharmacy services. How Blood Testing Supports Your Overall Health Regular blood testing is not just about diagnosing diseases—it can also offer insights into your general health. By measuring various indicators such as blood sugar, vitamin levels, and cholesterol profiles, healthcare practitioners can provide preventative care advice and issue timely interventions if necessary. Whether you are managing a chronic condition or ensuring that your health remains in optimal condition, a blood test is a powerful and simple tool in your healthcare arsenal. What to Expect During Your Appointment Preparing for a blood test appointment at our pharmacy is straightforward. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a knowledgeable member of our team who will guide you through each step of the process. The consultation will help address any specific queries you might have, ensuring your experience is both comfortable and informative. The actual drawing of blood is quick, usually taking only a few minutes, and the expertise of our staff means that each procedure is handled with precision and care. Addressing Common Concerns It is natural to have questions about the phlebotomy process, particularly if you have never experienced it before. Common concerns include the level of discomfort during the procedure and the risk of infection. Our experienced team understands these worries and ensures that every precaution is taken. The use of sterile, disposable equipment and adherence to safety guidelines mean that complications are extremely rare. Most patients report minimal discomfort, describing the sensation as a brief pinch that quickly subsides. Understanding Your Blood Test Results: A Friendly Guide to Common Markers

Understanding Your Blood Test Results: A Friendly Guide to Common Markers Blood tests are an essential part of diagnosing, monitoring, and managing your health. Whether you are a patient trying to decode your results or a healthcare professional seeking a refresher, understanding common markers can demystify what might otherwise seem like a confusing array of numbers and abbreviations. In this friendly guide, we will explore the meanings behind some of the most common blood test markers, help you understand their significance, and show how Your Local Pharmacy can support you on your journey to better health. The Importance of Blood Tests Blood tests provide a window into your body’s internal processes, offering valuable insights into how well your organs are functioning and whether you might be at risk for certain conditions. These tests are not only useful for diagnosing illnesses but also for monitoring ongoing treatments. Understanding these results can empower you and support informed conversations with your doctor. Moreover, with private services available at Your Local Pharmacy, getting quick and professional advice around your blood test results has never been easier. Common Blood Test Markers Explained While each blood test is tailored to look for specific conditions, some markers are commonly assessed during routine tests. Below, we explore what these markers mean and why they are important in assessing your overall health. Cholesterol Levels Cholesterol is a type of fat found in your blood and is crucial for building healthy cells. However, when levels become too high, they can increase the risk of heart disease. A typical blood test will differentiate between Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL), often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, and High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL), known as “good” cholesterol. Elevated LDL or low HDL levels can indicate a need for lifestyle changes or medication to avoid complications such as heart attacks or strokes. Blood Sugar and HbA1c Monitoring blood sugar levels is essential for diagnosing and managing diabetes. The fasting blood sugar test measures the amount of sugar in your blood after a period of not eating, while the HbA1c test shows your average blood sugar over a few months. Consistently high readings can suggest insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, emphasising the importance of regular monitoring and possibly working with healthcare professionals to adjust diet and exercise habits. Complete Blood Count (CBC) The Complete Blood Count test is a broad screening tool used to evaluate your overall health and detect a range of disorders, including anaemia and infection. This test measures several components such as red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Abnormal counts in any of these categories can be a sign that further investigation is needed, and they assist doctors in assessing conditions related to your immune system and overall blood health. Liver Function Tests (LFTs) Liver function tests help assess the health of your liver by measuring enzymes and proteins in your blood. Key markers include Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST). Elevated levels can be an early indicator of liver damage, whether due to alcohol use, medication effects, or other underlying conditions. Routine monitoring of liver markers is particularly important if you are taking medications that could affect liver health. Thyroid Function Tests Your thyroid gland plays a central role in regulating metabolism, and thyroid function tests are used to assess conditions such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. The most common markers here are Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4). Abnormal results can explain symptoms like weight changes, fatigue, or mood fluctuations, and they provide valuable clues for your healthcare provider when managing thyroid-related conditions. Interpreting Your Results in Context While understanding the role of each marker is important, context is key. Individual blood test results should always be interpreted in conjunction with your medical history, current medications, lifestyle, and overall clinical picture. Sometimes a result that appears borderline may not be cause for concern, and other times, even a slight deviation can indicate the early stages of a developing condition. It is vital that you discuss your results with a qualified healthcare professional who can provide personalised advice tailored to your needs.
