Pneumococcal Disease: Protection Against Pneumonia, Meningitis, and Sepsis

The Basics

What is Pneumococcal Disease?

Pneumococcal disease is the name for a group of illnesses caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae. These bacteria can cause serious infections in the lungs (Pneumonia), the blood (Sepsis), and the lining of the brain (Meningitis). It is spread through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, or by close contact with someone who is carrying the bacteria in their nose or throat.

Vaccination Overview

The Pneumococcal Vaccine
Feature PCV (e.g., Prevenar 13) PPV (e.g., Pneumovax 23)
Who is it for? Infants and high-risk adults. Adults 65+ and those with long-term health conditions.
Number of Doses Usually a single dose for adults. Usually a single dose.
The Booster Not routinely required for most. People with specific health conditions (e.g., no spleen) may need a booster every 5 years.
How it is given Administered as an injection into the upper arm. Administered as an injection into the upper arm.
When to get it Part of the routine childhood schedule or for travellers with underlying respiratory issues. Once you turn 65, or earlier if you have a chronic illness.

Safety & Side Effects

What to Expect After Vaccination

The pneumococcal vaccine is very safe. Most people have no problems, but mild side effects can occur:

  • Local Reaction: Redness, swelling, or a small hard lump at the injection site (common).

  • General: A mild fever, fatigue, or muscle aches for 24–48 hours.

  • Duration: These symptoms are temporary and are a sign that your immune system is responding to the vaccine.

Recognising Symptoms

Symptoms of Pneumococcal Infection

Symptoms depend on which part of the body is infected.

  • Pneumonia (Lung Infection): High fever, cough with thick mucus, chest pain, and shortness of breath.

  • Meningitis (Brain Lining Infection): Stiff neck, severe headache, sensitivity to light, and confusion.

  • Sepsis (Blood Poisoning): Chills, rapid heart rate, confusion, and extreme shivering.

  • Ear Infections (Otitis Media): Severe earache and a swollen, red eardrum (common in children).

Additional Precautions

Who is at High Risk?

While the vaccine is the best defence, certain groups should take extra care:

  • Age Factors: People over 65 and children under 2 are at the highest risk.

  • Underlying Conditions: If you have asthma, COPD, diabetes, or heart disease, ensure your vaccination is up to date.

  • Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently and avoid close contact with people who have respiratory infections.

  • Smoking: Smokers are at a significantly higher risk of pneumococcal pneumonia. Stopping smoking can reduce your risk of serious infection.

FAQ

I had the "flu jab"; does that protect me from Pneumonia?

No. The flu jab protects against the Influenza virus. While the flu can lead to pneumonia, the pneumococcal vaccine protects you directly against the most common bacterial cause of pneumonia.

No. For most healthy adults over 65, the pneumococcal vaccine is a one-off injection that provides long-term protection.
